Ballast Holland Automatic Brown
USS Holland (SS-1) was the United States Navy’s first modern commissioned submarine. Holland was named after Irish engineer, John Phillip Holland who was responsible for its development. His early attempts at submitting designs to the US Navy were turned away during the latter part of the 1800s. He was eventually succeeded with a privately built type initially named Holland VI. This was the first submarine having power to run submerged for any considerable distance, and the first to combine electric motors for submerged travel and gasoline engines for use on the surface. She was purchased and commissioned in 1900 by the US Navy as USS Holland.
