Description
CCCP Space Buran Automatic Blue Limited Edition
The Buran Shuttle was a Soviet developed reusable spacecraft in response to NASA’s Space Shuttle program. The project was the largest and the most expensive in the history of Soviet space exploration. While the Space Shuttle and the Buran program looked very similar there was one noticeable design difference. Unlike the American space shuttle that relied on three hydrogen-fueled engines to aid in reaching orbit, the Soviet spacecraft carried only lighter maneuvering rockets, which gave it the capability to carry heavier payloads to and from space. Nearly all the propulsion necessary to launch Buran into space came from the world’s most powerful booster rocket, the massive 20-story-tall Energia. The Buran’s lone flight was completed successfully on Nov. 15 1988, near the beginning of the end of the Soviet Union, a year before the fall of the Berlin Wall. The Buran shuttle was more capable, more versatile and safer than the space shuttle, but by the time it was ready to fly, the Cold War was coming to an end and the lack of resources and funding to continue the program meant its premature demise.
